What to visit in Toledo?
Toledo is one of the most important cities in the history of Spain, and its historic center is declared a World Heritage Site as one of the largest in the country, so it is advisable to spend more than one day in the city. Plan your trip well, and if you have little time, we recommend the following:
Tourist bracelet
For 9€ you can visit 7 representative monuments of the city: the mosque “Cristo de la luz”, the synagogue of “Santa María la Blanca”, the monastery of “San Juan de los reyes”, the church of “Santo Tomé” (where the famous painting by El Greco “The Burial of the Lord of Orgaz” is exhibited), the church “Salvador”, the church of “San Ildefonso” and the College of “Doncellas Nobles”.
Cathedral
The Cathedral of Toledo is the second largest in Spain and the most important in terms of its heritage. Inside are preserved jewels of inestimable value. Discover it with the audio guide, or better yet, with our guided tour.
Synagogues
The Spanish Jewish population in the Middle Ages was the most important economically and culturally. Nowadays, there are only three synagogues left in all of Spain, and two of them are in Toledo. There is the synagogue of “Santa María la Blanca”, the oldest in Europe preserved in its state, and the spectacular synagogue “del Tránsito”, which also houses the “Sefardí” museum.
Monasteries, convents and churches
Toledo has been the capital of Catholicism since the Visigothic period. Today there are many religious monuments that you can visit and in some you can also buy traditional sweets. Our recommendations: the church of “San Román”, the monastery of “San Juan de los Reyes”, the convent of “Santa Isabel” and the convent of “Santo Domingo el Antiguo”. Some churches and convents no longer have a religious use, such as the church of “San Vicente” (today the Circle of Art) or the convent of “San Pedro Mártir”.
Greco Spaces
Domenico Theotocopoulos, known as Greco, is the Toledan painter par excellence. Although he was born in Greece, he spent most of his life in Toledo where he perfected his painting. Among his most important works are “The Burial of the Count of Orgaz” (Church of “Santo Tomé”), “The Division of Christ’s Tunic” (Cathedral), and “View and Plan of Toledo” (El Greco Museum). Other spaces dedicated to El Greco exist such as the “Santa Cruz” museum, the “Santo Domingo el Antiguo” convent, or the “Tavera” hospital.
Most of the monuments close before 6pm, so we recommend that you take advantage of the morning to visit them, and enjoy the evening to get lost among the convents and streets of Toledo.
